Republic of Belarus

Belarus, officially the Republic of Belarus, bordered by Russia to the northeast, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest.

Its capital is Minsk; other major cities include Brest, Hrodna (Grodno), Homiel (Gomel), Mahilioŭ (Mogilev) and Vitsebsk (Vitebsk). Over 40% of its 207,600 square kilometres is forested.

The population is 9.49 million people (January 2016).Ethnic Belarusians constitute 83.7% of Belarus's total population. The next largest ethnic groups are: Russians (8.3%), Poles (3.1%), and Ukrainians (1.7%). Belarus has a population density of about 50 people per square kilometer (127 per sq mi); 70% of its total population is concentrated in urban areas. Minsk, the nation's capital and largest city, was home to 1,937,900 residents in 2015.

The economy of Belarus has seen sustained growth in recent years. These are just some of the results: steady increase in GDP since 1992; considerable reduction in the trade deficit; improvement in the standard of living for the population of Belarus.
